What is T.M.J. Massage Therapy?

TMJ

T.M.J. stands for the Temperomandibular Joint.  This jaw joint is really two joints both working simultaneously to allow you to talk, eat food and swallow.  It is located just in front of your ear below the cheekbone, and is one of the most important joints in the human body.  It has a more intimate relationship with the nervous system and the structure of the entire body than any other part of your body.  By virtue of that when the T.M.J. goes bad it can negatively influence many other parts of the body, especially other old injuries in the neck, shoulders, midback, lowback, and pelvis.

A Massage Therapist can use Neuromuscular Massage Therapy techniques, such as direct pressure, on the common tender points and trigger points found in the muscles of the jaw. As the jaw muscles are accurately stimulated with direct pressure much relief can come from this painful condition.

It is very important that a person suffering from this condition seek the help of a Dentist, Orthodontist, Chiropractor or Physical therapist to address the other components of T.M.J. Dysfunction. These include improper occlusion, bad oral habits like clenching, and grinding, neck and spinal misalignment, chronic posture problems, and weak, unbalanced muscles in the neck, jaw, head and body.
